Tip #1:
Encourage friends and relatives to give books to your child as gifts. Markers, colored pencils, pads of paper make excellent birthday or holiday gifts.
Every special occasion my son gets lots of books. His library is full of fiction and non-fiction books. My son has loved books since he was able to sit on his own. I have videos of him at 10 months pretending to read a book; he was so cute. He is only two now but he loves books more than any toy that has ever been given to him.
When we read together, my son always chooses a book that he enjoys; Charlie the Ranch Dog is his favorite. My son loves the question and answer time we share because he has my undivided attention to "show off" what he knows. I point to characters and ask who they are. I ask him to tell me what the character is doing. I ask him to draw a picture of the character (that is his favorite thing.:-)
Any time you can read is great. If you choose to read right before bed as a routine and a special time for just you two it will make a huge difference. If you skip a day, that is okay, life happens.
